Course Description

This is the 4th state-of-the-art, biennial course given to educate local, national and international pathologists and researchers on fundamental and emerging issues of rodent pathology. The first three courses were a raging success (Reproductive Pathology in 2002, Neuropathology in 2004, and Cardiopulmonary Pathology in 2006) each with about 150 attendees. The course showcases local North Carolina expertise as well as speakers from around the nation and world. It is designed to provide useful information on current issues and techniques in rodent pathology to research and diagnostic pathologists, pathologists-in-training, and interested members of the research community.

The course for this year features ~20 presentations covering state-of-the-art rodent pathology and research on the immune system as well as an interactive workshop led by Dr. Jerry Ward including applied histopathology and hands-on evaluation of case material (please submit your problem cases early!). Our keynote speaker is Dr. Frieke Kuper who will give two presentations, one on aging and the immune system and the other on respiratory allergies. The sessions are didactic and cover basic and advanced techniques in handling and interpreting tissues, special techniques for diagnostics and a review of diseases of the rodent immune system. Normal anatomy and histology will be covered, followed by presentations on mechanisms of disease, immunophenotyping, immunotoxicity screening/functional testing, enhanced histopathology and animal models.
